The 11-Step Grayscale Card
The 11-step grayscale card is a professional imaging testing tool primarily used to evaluate the grayscale reproduction capability of cameras. It assesses the fineness of the image's light and dark levels through 11 different brightness levels ranging from pure white to pure black. The common NHK standard gamma value is 0.45. It can also be equipped with blue, yellow, and red color blocks to assist in testing color saturation.
1. Core specifications
It is divided into two types: transmissive and reflective. The mainstream effective size is 240×180mm, and some models are compatible with 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios.
The transmittance/reflectance of grayscale is distributed on a logarithmic scale, with a contrast range up to 40:1, which complies with industry standards such as ITU BT.709. It enables cameras that have undergone standard gamma correction to output linear step signals.
2. Main purposes
It can be used to test key imaging parameters such as camera metering accuracy, camera gamma characteristics, white balance, and dynamic range. It is widely applied in factory calibration and performance testing scenarios for surveillance equipment and photographic and video equipment.
